Chargeback reason code library

Every Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover reason code an online seller is likely to see — what it means and which evidence story answers it. Free, no signup. Written for Stripe sellers of courses, software, downloads, and memberships.

Find your code first. In the Stripe Dashboard, open the dispute: Stripe shows its own reason (for example fraudulent). The card network's reason code is on the dispute where Stripe exposes it — in the API, look for payment_method_details.card.network_reason_code. The network code tells you exactly what the cardholder's bank claimed.

Networks revise their code lists. The names below follow each network's published lists; if your dispute shows a code that isn't here, the Stripe reason still points you to the right guide. Where Stripe's published category tables list a code, the "Related" guide follows Stripe; for the other codes, the link is our mapping, not Stripe's. Discover's full dispute rules aren't public, and in Stripe a Discover dispute may show a four-digit network code (for example 7030 for card-not-present fraud) rather than the two-letter codes listed below.

Guides by Stripe dispute reason

Stripe groups network codes into its own reasons. Each guide covers the evidence story behind the codes we map to it:

Authorization and processing-error codes are often about your payment setup rather than evidence — when a code can't be answered with records, the right move is usually to accept and fix the cause. Our checker says so before you spend time on it.
